West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service
The West Yorkshire Fire and Civil Defence Authority was established on 1 April 1986 upon abolition of the former County Council and is one of several metropolitan joint authorities nationwide. Having changed its statutory name to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, under the provisions of the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, the Authority is responsible for the provision and maintenance of an efficient and effective fire service across the County.
Membership of the Authority is drawn from the five constituent West Yorkshire councils (Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees, Wakefield and Calderdale) with representation determined by the number of local government electors in any given area. Members of the Authority are appointed by their own local council on the basis of the political proportionality.The 22 Members appointed by the five District Councils within West Yorkshire. Bradford has 5 members.
West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee
West Yorkshire Joint Services are provided by a Joint Committee of Councillors from the five district councils within West Yorkshire (Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield). The services provided include archives, archaeology, trading standards, analytical and materials testing services. The Joint Services are funded by the five district councils on a pro rata basis based on population and also through self generated income.
