Sub-regional Organisations - Business and Economy

West Yorkshire Economic Partnership

The West Yorkshire Economic Partnership Research Group has developed the West Yorkshire Research Matrix, which maps completed, ongoing and planned research undertaken or commissioned by Research Group organisations across the sub-region in a number of policy areas.

The West Yorkshire Economic Partnership provides strategic direction for the Investment Planning initiative to deliver the Regional Economic Strategy (RES) through the West Yorkshire Sub-regional Investment Plan (SRIP).

It includes representatives from—

  • Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees, Wakefield and Calderdale local authorities and local strategic partnerships

  • West Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council

  • West Yorkshire Enterprise Partnership (including Business Link West Yorkshire)

  • Leeds, Bradford and Mid-Yorkshire Chambers of Commerce

  • West Yorkshire Universities

  • Yorkshire Forward

  • West Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority

  • West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority (METRO)

The four sub-regional SRIPs set clear economic priorities based on robust analysis (carried out through Strategic Economic Assessments) and will commission specific projects to address those agrees priorities. The central purpose of the plans is to ensure the most effective use of public funds by ensuring close co-ordination of funding streams including Yorkshire Forward's single pot, European funds and other key public sector funds. In 2004, Yorkshire Forward became the first RDA to introduce such 'investment plans', which add up to a five year programme of investment of more than £2bn that identifies key economic priorities across the region until 2009.

West Yorkshire Rural Partnership

The West Yorkshire Rural Partnership has taken a lead role in identifying the socio-economic issues facing rural West Yorkshire. Working closely with Yorkshire Forward, the Partnership will shortly develop a programme of activity to address these issues. This activity will specifically address improving rural productivity and access to services in rural areas. The Partnership will commission activity from legacy resources which transferred to Yorkshire Forward from the Countryside Agency as part of the Modernising Rural Delivery Review. These funds will be channelled through the West Yorkshire Sub-Regional Investment Plan over the next three years and it is hoped that activity will lay the foundations for future rural delivery. Key areas for development within the Bradford District are co - location of services, virtual access to services and business incubator units. The West Yorkshire Rural Partnership is also playing a key role in identifying the priorities for West Yorkshire’s “Rural and Social Community Programme”, which is led by Yorkshire Rural Community Council and GOYH. The partnership will be commissioning programmes of activity early in 2006. For more details of Bradford Council’s involvement in the West Yorkshire Partnership and the programmes please contact Dave Melling on 01274 433880.
