Governance
[The Yorkshire and Humber Association of Civic Societies] is the regional association of civic societies and is supported by the [Civic Trust] in London and [English Heritage]. Membership consists of local civic societies and civic trusts around the region. The work of the societies encompasses a variety of areas covering anything from the regular review of planning applications, to gathering support for the protection and renovation of historic buildings, to the creation of new and vibrant public spaces to enhance local communities.
Department for Communities and Local Government – Regional Local Government Practice Team
The regional Local Government Practice team is based within GOYH and works with DCLG and local authorities to secure improvement and innovation. Using Capacity Building Funds the team works directly with the region’s poorer performing councils. Through direct support to the regional Improvement and Innovation forum, the Local Government Practice Team contributes to wider capacity building. They also work directly with GOYH on LPSA, Local Area Agreements and the developing agenda for engaging with priority places in the region.

Regional Centre of Excellence, Yorkshire and The Humber
There are nine Regional Centres of Excellence (RCEs) in the English regions, each hosted by a local authority and each with its own governance structure. Each has a Chief Executive and a Regional Director. Each RCE has its own business plan to deliver, but all of them are a key delivery mechanism for improving procurement, partnering, efficiency and service delivery across local government. They act as the first line of support and guidance on procurement, partnering and efficiency for authorities in the region. A number of cross cutting workstreams have identified by ODPM in their report “ Delivering Efficiencies in Local Services ”

The Audit Commission Regional Directorate

The Audit Commission is an independent public body responsible for ensuring that public money is spent economically, efficiently, and effectively in the areas of local government, housing, health, criminal justice and fire and rescue services. Its mission is to be a driving force in the improvement of public services. It promotes good practice and helps those responsible for public services to achieve better outcomes for citizens, with a focus on those people who need public services most.

Local Government Improvement Board
A partnership of key players inside and outside local government whose vision is to develop Local Government of a World Class Standard across Yorkshire and Humber. Its aim is to coordinate and drive a collaborative regional approach to improving local government in Yorkshire and Humber which adds value to the local, national and wider context. The Partnership objectives are to:

support the development of priority improvement activities, which meet the needs of the region’s local authorities

maximise opportunities to improve local authorities in the region, eg, the National Capacity Building Programme

capture and disseminate knowledge, experience and best practice
Yorkshire Local Councils Association (YLCA) represents Parish and Town Councils. No website.
Yorkshire Local Councils Association (YLCA)
is an independent membership organisation established to serve the interests of its member parish and town councils in the first instance and the more general interests of parish governance within the sub-regions of North, South and West Yorkshire.
The Third Sector Leadership Centre has been set up to raise the profile of leadership and to support leaders within the third sector.
