National Regional Policy
This page gives links to some important national government departments and other national bodies which have a role in shaping policy that is delivered at regional and local level.
- Department for Communities and Local Government
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) was created on 5 May 2006 with a remit to promote community cohesion and equality, as well as responsibility for housing, urban regeneration, planning and local government.
It unites the communities and Civil Renewal functions previously undertaken by the Home Office, with responsibility for regeneration, neighbourhood renewal and local government (previously held by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister).The new department brings together responsibility for equality policy, including policy on race, faith, gender and sexual orientation. These functions were previously split between several government departments. The Women and Equality Unit moves to DCLG from DTI . The Race, Cohesion and Faiths Directorate moves to DCLG from the Home Office. DCLG will also be the sponsor department for the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR).
- Home Office
The Home Office is the government department responsible for ensuring that people live in a safe, just and tolerant society. They are responsible for the police in England and Wales, national security, the justice system and immigration.
- Cabinet Office
The Cabinet Office is at the centre of Government, coordinating policy and strategy across government departments.
- IDeA
The Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) works in partnership with all councils, to enhance the performance of the best, accelerate the speed of improvement of the rest, and develop the sector as a whole.
- Local Government Association
The Local Government Association (LGA), formed on 1 April 1997, exists to promote better local government. It represents just under 500 member authorities. It works to realise a shared vision of local government that enables local people to shape a distinctive and better future for their locality and its communities and aims to put local councils at the heart of the drive to improve public services and to work with government to ensure that the policy, legislative and financial context in which they operate, supports that objective.
Based in Westminster, the LGA is a voluntary lobbying organisation. Members include county councils, metropolitan district councils, English unitary authorities, London boroughs, shire district councils and Welsh unitary authorities. It also represents fire authorities, police authorities, national park authorities and passenger transport authorities
- Central Local Partnership
The CLP is a partnership between central government and the Local Government Association, working together in the development and implementation of policy.

This website gives direct access to information on all Government departments
- Government Office Network
The network represents 10 Whitehall Departments, Government Offices are the primary means by which a wide range of Government policies are delivered in the English regions.
- English Regions Network
An umbrella organisation for the Regional Assemblies. Its role is to bring members and officials together to discuss matters of mutual interest, and to co-ordinate joint Assemblies activity.
